I found it! A beautiful steel randonneuring frame I can afford, with low trail geometry, clearance for wider tires and fenders. The icing on the cake is that it’s made in the United States… Madison, Wisconsin… my folks’ home town! I’m so excited!!
It’s not cheap as far as bike frames in general go, but it is very affordable as far as randonneuring bike frames go. They have one with my preferred 60cm top tube length, it uses a quill stem (which I find more beautiful than the more modern threadless alternative), and it has some really thoughtful design features. You can read all about it here if you’re as geeky about these things as I am.
I haven’t sorted out all the details yet, but I’ll almost certainly be swapping over the Campagnolo Daytona drivetrain from my LeMond road bike. In fact, once I get the Pelican built up I’ll probably end up consolidating down to just it, the Xtracycle, and maybe nothing else. Shocking!!
