My wife Tessa and I went up to Monterey this weekend to take in the World Superbike racing action at Laguna Seca Raceway. What a great time! We hung out in Monterey on Saturday, checking out the rows and rows of bikes on Cannery Row, and then spent all of Sunday at the track, where we watched some really great racing.
While I’ve been following World Superbike, AMA Superbikes and MotoGP for a while now on Speed, this was my first chance to live racing action, and it was insane! We sat in the grandstands in the beginning of the straightaway between turn 4 and turn 5, where we had a great view of the riders as they came around most of the infield. There was also a bigscreen TV where we could watch the rest of the track. The racing action was hot and heavy, definitely some of the most exciting so far this season.
Australian Troy Bayliss, the reigning world champ and points leader for the ’02 season, won the first of the two World Superbike races. Colin Edwards, the top-ranked American rider in the series, won the second race, taking home his first victory at Laguna Seca and bringing him into striking distance for the world championship with 4 rounds to go. The crowd of 98,000 was absolutely estatic over his win, and it was a great feeling to see it happen.
