LinuxWorld: Part II

Well, you’ll have to forgive any blatant misspellings in this post–I’m entering this via the worst possible interface I have ever experienced in my entire life. That’s right, since the company Windoze laptop has crapped out, I have been unceremoniously relegated to the “OnLine by LodgeNet” WebTV-like kludge that somehow passes for an internet appliance. The screen is fuzzy, the fonts are about 50 times the normal size, and screen resolution looks like it runs about 320 x 320 or so. To top it all off, the keyboard seems to support a maximum input speed of approximately one character per second–any faster and you simply don’t seem to get any result at all. Basically, it’s like what I could imagine being in hell will be like.

On a more positive note, I met Linus this morning, and he signed the copy of “Just For Fun” that I was selected to receive by the powers that be here at LinuxWorld. Linus seems like a very interesting character IRL, and he certainly had some clever and unexpected (at least for me) things to say during the round table that he participated in today, along with Jeremy Allison, Brian Behlendorf, Dirk Hohndel and Larry Augustin (moderator). A very cool show so far, indeed!

I went over the exhibitor booths today in greater detail, with some notables including:

– Ximian’s Evolution desktop, very cool; finally brings GNOME up to the eye-candy standard that KDE 2.x has set (to me a good thing) http://www.ximian.com

– Linux Terminal Server Project http://www.ltsp.org , which enables very thin clients to run using a pretty low- to mid-range app server, using network boot and NFS–cool!

– Tribes II on Linux-bitchin’ graphics, now i won’t miss C-S at all

There’s a lot more really cool, impressive stuff, but I am going to wait till I am back to a real machine. Overall, I have really learned a lot here and had a blast. Definitely check out one of these if you ever get the chance
